The Best Vitamin C Serum for Sensitive Skin: Why We Chose Oil-Soluble Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most loved skincare ingredients for brighter, more even-looking skin. But if you have sensitive skin, you may have tried a vitamin C serum and been put off by stinging, redness or tightness. The good news: it's usually not vitamin C itself that's the problem, but the form it comes in.

Why does vitamin C serum sting?

Many classic vitamin C serums use L-ascorbic acid, the pure form of vitamin C. It's effective, but it's unstable and needs a very acidic, water-based formula to work. That low pH is what can make sensitive skin tingle or sting, especially at higher strengths. L-ascorbic acid also oxidises quickly once opened, which is why some serums turn orange or brown in the bottle.

What is oil-soluble vitamin C?

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, often called Tetra C, is a form of vitamin C that dissolves in oil rather than water. That changes a few things:

  • No acidic base needed. Because it sits in oils, there's no low-pH formula to irritate skin.
  • More stable. It's far less prone to oxidising than L-ascorbic acid, so it stays effective for longer.
  • Comfortable feel. It blends into nourishing oils that soften skin rather than tightening it.

For sensitive skin and vitamin C beginners, that makes it a gentler way in.

Why 3%?

More isn't always better. In Wild C we use 3% Tetra C, chosen so sensitive skin gets brightening benefits without the sting. Consistency matters more than strength: a serum you're happy to use every day will do more than a strong one that sits on the shelf.

Meet kasturi manjal: wild turmeric

Kasturi manjal (Curcuma aromatica) is a wild turmeric used in South Indian beauty rituals for generations, traditionally prized for radiant skin. Unlike kitchen turmeric, it doesn't stain yellow, which is why it has long been favoured for skin. In Wild C, it works alongside vitamin C to help target dullness and uneven tone.

How to add vitamin C to a sensitive skin routine

  1. Patch test first. Apply a little behind the ear or on the inner arm for a couple of days.
  2. Start slowly. Use it every other day for the first week, then daily.
  3. Apply to clean skin. Press 2–3 drops into face and neck, morning or night.
  4. Always wear SPF in the day. Vitamin C and sunscreen work best as a team against dark spots.
  5. Be patient. Give it around four weeks to see a brighter, more even-looking complexion.
